Mass Effect Gets Reviewed (Zero Punctuation Edition)

Finaly, somebody who isn't as biased as Gamespot.com, and in the business of reviewing weekly videogames, has come forward about Mass Effect . Enjoy!

Aston Martin V12 Vantage RS

The Aston Martin V12 Vantage RS is the real deal. Though officially referred to as a "Performance Concept Car" during its debut at the opening of Aston Martin's new design center yesterday, it's fully functional like all of Aston's concepts and Ulrich Bez, the automaker's CEO, said if the interest is there, they'll build it. We don't know about you, but we're pretty interested in a 3,527-lbs. car with a race-derived V12 motor producing 600bhp. Performance for the car has been conservatively quoted as 4.0 seconds to 62 mph and 8.5 seconds to 100 mph.

Today we can better analyze the design of the V12 Vantage RS thanks to a bevy of high-res images released by Aston Martin this morning. What would you call that color, Cornflower or Baby Blue? Either way, we're not big fans of it for softening the demeanor of this British-born supercar. Despite that, the rest of the Vantage's already gorgeous exterior gets down to business with new carbon fiber pieces for the hood and trunk lid, as well as enough louvers on the bonnet to cool a nuclear reactor. A carbon fiber chin spoiler keeps things steady at high speed and out back the V12 Vantage RS has also been fitted with a retractable spoiler. The interior has also been wrapped entirely in grippy suede, including the heavily-bolstered though comfortable-looking seats.

What I love about the V12 Vantage RS is that it's not just a hat-tip to the recently defunct V12 Vanquish. It is its own car, and a fierce one at that. Though development of the car likely began before Aston Martin had been sold by Ford, we're glad the new owners didn't kill this concept to save some money.

CLOVERFIELD

If you just happened to be at the right place at the right time (during the Transformers previews), you would have seen the teaser trailer for Cloverfield, the new monster movie from producer J.J. Abrams, best known for his work on the television series Lost. The movie synopsis is as follows:

"Five young New Yorkers throw their friend a going-away party the night that a monster the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city. Told from the point of view of their video camera, the film is a document of their attempt to survive the most surreal, horrifying event of their lives."

The film, having a release date of 1-18-08, might be a new film about Godzilla or just another media flop. The future will tell; it wont take long for the script to be leaked. (Silly Abrams, no secret is safe from movie nerds.)

Hands-On With The Sidekick Slide

The widescreen Sidekick LX has cast a long, ominous shadow over the release of the Sidekick Slide, threatening to take a whole lot of steam over the baby Hiptop's launch -- Motorola's first -- come November 7. Guess what, though? Every time I put my hand on the Slide, I'm liking it more and more. The thing feels rock solid, the slide mechanism seems like it'll probably be a lot less prone to issues than the pivot found on other models (while spring loading still makes it satisfying to use) and the black / violet color combo isn't the least bit abrasive in person. Even though Danger and T-Mobile have sourced this model to Moto instead of the usual suspect Sharp, make no mistake that this thing's every bit as much a Sidekick inside -- the software's the same and the controls are all where you'd expect them to be. My only real complaints here: the keypad's a little tricky to use thanks to a dearth of tactile feedback, and after playing with the LX, the Slide's display is a low-res disappointment that leaves a heap of black margin around the edges where additional screen real estate should be. SEMA 2007: Honda Accord Coupe HF-S Concept

Honda's Accord Coupe has barely hit the pavement and we're already seeing what the platform can host in terms of modifications. Today at SEMA, Honda showed off a BMW M6-like Accord Coupe HF-S Concept that looks extremely hot and features a retuned throttle, suspension and exhaust. This particular Accord Coupe was built by Honda Access America, Inc., Honda's U.S. accessory development team, so it is conceivable that you could replicate it for yourself. I would highly recommend it.

Mugen RR Civic Sells Out (In Japan)

The Honda Civic Mugen RR (based on the new JDM Honda Civic Type R) is limited to a total production run of 300 cars. Japanese track fiends with ¥4.7million to spend on a spiffy, street-legal time attack weapon are its target audience -- and a receptive one at that. On September 14th at 9:00 AM local time in Japan, reservations for Mugen's ultimate Type R officially began being taken. By 9:10 AM, according to the Japanese enthusiast site, Carview, the 300th reservation was placed. However you want to parse the numbers (we're sure additional reservations were taken, in case some prospective buyers bail out), one thing's certain: all 300 cars are spoken for well in advance of the expected January delivery date.

Those lucky enough to secure the Mugen RR receive a lighter, more powerful and track-tuned Civic Type R that in the right hands is capable of lapping Japan's Tsukuba circuit in 1:06:38. At least that's what the folks at Mugen were able to wring out of it. We're sure some of the car's buyers will be looking to top that number as soon as they have a chance. With this thing, life is a driving game, and Time Attack mode is always on.

More Reventon Goodness

It lurked between three women dressed in beige overalls and work boots. The beige tarp that covered it fell in a mess of sharp points and acute angles, as if someone had stuck a chunk of quartz underneath it. Before Stephan Winkelmann, CEO of Lamborghini, came out and spoke, there was a video presentation shown on the screen behind the car. It was probably the same video shown to the lucky few given advance notice of the car, a waterfall of quick cuts that gave tasty glimpses of the car at the center of the hubbub.

Thankfully, the first thing Stephan did before speaking was unveil the car. He spoke of the success of Lamborghini, how 2007 would be another record year, and that this car was a tribute to the continuing success of the raging bull. He let us know that it's a 6.5-liter V12 with 650 horsepower, that it has 4-wheel drive, that it is named after the bull that killed Felix Guzman in 1943, and that it costs one million euros before taxes. Then he introduced the team that was responsible for the car. And then he said goodbye. That was it. No mention of the dashboard. No mention of why they're only making 20 of them. No mention of... why? Sure, Lamborghini's doing well, and to celebrate you make 20 -- twenty?! -- of a car that is the most terrific piece of sculpture to breath God's oxygen in years.

Lamborghini Reventon Revealed!

The Volkswagen Group threw a major shindig in Frankfurt earlier tonight at which it showed off all the new wares its introducing to the public at the Frankfurt show beginning tomorrow. The car that has assuredly generated the most heavy breathing this evening is the holy-crap-that-thing's-effing-badass Lamborghini Reventon. Named for the bull that killed toreador Felix Guzman in 1943, the Reventon is basically the ultimate Murcielago in all resprects, including price. The super-limited (only twenty cars are being built) supercar costs a cool $1,000,000, and all of them are already sold. Power from its V12 is up around 20 horses over the regular Murcielago LP640, so you get a little extra juice for the added dough.

Ah, the new Penny Arcade Comic weekly update. If you can't already tell, it has been a slow week in all things news... Meh.

Audi TT RS

According to Britain's Autocar, the Audi TT RS is waiting for a nod from Audi brass. Here's hoping the suits start making like bobbleheads and greenlight the über TT soon. The skinny, according to Autocar, goes like this. The TT RS will be powered by a turbocharged version of the 2.5L 5-cylinder currently found under the hood of the VW Jetta. The high-po 5-banger will dish out a stiff 350 horsepower, a full 100 more than the current TT 3.2 quattro range-topper.

The mag speculates that the RS will be a coupe-only offering whose styling borrows elements from the extreme-looking TT Clubsport show car the automaker trotted out at the Wörthersee meet earlier this summer (gallery below). Autocar also spoke to an insider who claims to have heard the 2.5 turbo, and word is that the sound recalls that of the fabled capital-Q Quattro. If that's accurate and it sounds anything like this, it'll be a four-wheeled piece of Heaven on Earth. Expect a 5-second 0-60 sprint and a governed top end of 155 mph. Autocar also tells us to expect a TT S powered by a hopped-up version of the 2.0 TFSI motor making 261 horsepower. Please hurry, Audi.

Frankfurt Preview: Novitec Rosso Kicks The Ferrari 599 GTB Up A Notch

Beginning with the already competent Ferrari 599 GTB, the tuning haus sought to build off the Fezza's strong points while keeping body modifications as low-key as possible when starting with such a striking piece of machinery. The engine output has been bumped by 25 HP (totaling 645 HP) through the implementation of new exhaust with larger, 90mm dual tips and a revised ECU. Top speed has been increased by an addition 5 KM/H, and Novitec plans to go even further in 2008 when it releases a more comprehensive engine package.

To make things stick, the company has fitted a KW Automotive adjustable aluminum suspension setup, which also allows users to adjust ride height by a control within the cabin. The brakes have also been upgraded to 405mm on all four corners courtesy of a Brembo six-piston setup.

On the outside, down force and cooling is improved via a new body kit that includes a new front air dam, rear diffuser, wing, side flaps and a set of side skirts that incorporate larger intake openings. Naturally, the rolling stock has been upgraded, with 20-inch N3 wheels up front and 21-inch out back, wrapped in Pirelli P Zero rubber. Smoked LED taillights round out the visual mods.

Audi RS6: More Than 600 HP?

At one time Japanese regulations prohibited engines in that country producing more than 274hp, and oddly enough a wide array of different engines were all rated at that same level. Given the actual performance of the cars, it was clear that many manufacturers were sandbagging. Audi appears set to do the same with its uber-powerful RS6. The twin-turbo V10 is expected to carry an official rating of 571 hp, but the actual output could be as high as 610hp. Does anyone actually need this much power in a sedan or wagon? Audi A4: Details

The new A4 may look similar to the model it's replacing, some significant work has gone on underneath the sheetmetal to move the engine farther back, which both improves weight distribution and allowed the designer's to reduce the front overhang. Available engines will include a smattering of petrol and diesel options, the base motor being a 1.8TFSI and the top end mill a 265-hp 3.2L FSI V6. Transmission choices for now are limited to a six-speed manual, tiptronic auto and CVT, with the DSG expected to be made available later.

Meanwhile, the interior appears to be typical Audi, if you like that sort of thing. While no doubt impeccable to the touch, some might be getting a bit tired of Audi's traditional interior design.

Record Shattered (Mine Too!)

When Tim Brady punched the accelerator in the Porsche 911 Turbo he was piloting down a rural road in Oxfordshire earlier this year, he could never have imagined that the action would become a moment of infamy. After all, he had to feel pretty confident that no police were on speed patrol where he was, else he wouldn't have wound the car out to 172 MPH. Unfortunately for him, the fuzz was there, and yesterday, Mr. Brady officially became the fastest speeder ever caught in Great Britain when he pled guilty to charges of dangerous driving. His 172 MPH shatters the former high mark of 156 MPH set by a BMW M3 driver in Scotland. That guy went to jail for five months, which doesn't bode well for Mr. Clark.

Leaked: New iPods!

Since Steve Jobs assumes that people are gonna buy a new iPod every year, he just can't resist tossing the next wave of 'em at your face. Behold, the new iPod (pictured left)... Or iPod Nano? Well, whatever it is, it looks kind of big for my taste. It supposedly uses an OS X-based operating system; the same OS that Mac users are enjoying right now. iPod? uSheep.

GT5 Prologue Gives Rise To Dualshock 3

There is a rumor going around thet the new rumble functionality in the new Dualshock 3, is to be featured in Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. The discussion of rumble has lead to people thinking that the controller featured on the GT5 Website (above) is, in fact, the Dualshock 3. The silhouette doesn't say much to me.

Aston Martin DBS

Here are a few shots of the more track-like DBS from Aston Martin. Finished in a bluish silver or silvery light blue depending on your vantage point (Ha ha, vantage), I'm still a bit conflicted about this newest top rung Aston. While the recently retired Vanquish was all brutal muscle with some semblance of elegance still there, this DBS looks a bit tuner-like, and although it looks like it might be comfortable at a track-day event, it loses some of the fluidity of design that has been the hallmark of recent Aston Martin design. I'll reserve judgment until after one spends some time in the AB garage (fingers crossed!). There are plenty of media pics available by clicking here.

Paramount & Dreamworks Ditch Blu-Ray? This Is Madness!

The latest blow in the stalemate war: Paramount Pictures and Dreamworks Animation have dropped their Blu-Ray support in exclusive favor of HD-DVD. When the format fiasco initially began, the two studios were already exclusive to HD-DVD, before later deciding to release their films on Blu-Ray as well. This flip-flop means that films such as Transformers and Shrek the Third will only be available on HD-DVD, along with features from Nickelodeon Movies and MTV Films.

Materazzi Speaks Out

You guys remember that one beautiful evening, where Zinedine Zidane dropped Marco Materazzi in the chest? It was called the 2006 World Cup... Or something. Man, I love that show. Well, it turns out that Materazzi has a new book on the market, which talks about this dispute in detail. The exact words that were uttered from Materazzi were, "I prefer the whore that is your sister."

How To Kill A PS3... Not

Clearly due to the current heat on Microsoft concerning the Xbox 360 RROD, disk scratching, and overheating scandals, Sony's Dave Karraker is mooning on the company's official blog over a recent PS3 Vault "stress test" called "How to kill a PS3 console" which showed the company's game system to be surprisingly resilient in the face of extreme conditions. "A lot of noise has been made recently about the reliability issues of one of our competitor's systems," Karraker said, then went on to kick some sand in Redmond's eye by adding "Did it fail? Nope. Like the Energizer Bunny, it kept going and going and going." Admittedly, the tests -- which included running games and Blu-ray movies for 108 hours in a typical "living room" environment, placing the console in a freezer van then lowering the temperature from 50 degrees to zero, and powering the PS3 in a sauna where heat increased from 100 degrees to 120 degrees over a nearly three-day session -- were quite extreme. In the end, however, the testers say besides being "extremely hot" after coming out of the sauna, the system is running fine and back in regular use. Microsoft, the ball's in your court. Earlier this week, Alfa Romeo showed off the new 8C Competizione for the media. They have yet to let anyone drive it though. If any of you would care to drive such an amazing piece of Italian mastery of an automobile, simply write a letter to Alfa Romeo. Explain how you would love the chance to drive such a machine, and then simply insert said letter into your mouth and eat it. You're just not good enough. Google Is Interested In 700MHz Spectrum Auction

GTA IV Delayed... GTA '08 Announced

This is a sad day amongst fans (demented five-year-olds) of the GTA series. It has just been announced that the Grand Theft Auto series will have to be on hold until the second quarter of 2008. This occurs mainly because of the attempt to polish up the game. You can read more about this shocker here
